Progress Report: 프리즈, Episodes 3-4

Reporting on series as I watch them

Note: This post may contain spoilers.

The series gets noticeably better now that it got away from its rough start, especially in terms of storytelling. However, the actual story at hand is still noticeably lacking, especially in terms of building in a larger narrative to wrap all the romance around, in part because the romance is rather dull, especially when you think about the unfortunate implications involved in the age difference. Plus there's little to salvage the problems with how multi-hundred year old vampires are acting, both with Joongwon's "I hate being a vampire" act as well as with Ehwa's multi-century unrequited love for Joongwon, which is patently unbelievable.

The series does have some potential in the serial killings that very occasionally show up in the storyline, but it fails to really develop that angle much and could have easily mixed in a little thriller with the romance, but decides to go with the very flat Manic Pixie Dream Girl romance with a vampire male lead. Sorry, you can't sell me on just that alone. Add in some more fantasy to make it more compelling, put in some thriller to give it an edge, heck develop any of the characters beyond their archetype and I might be able to forgive the show's abundance of sheer ridiculousness, but this is just not working for me.

It does have one episode to prove itself, so I hope it does, but it's not looking good.
